ABS Pipe

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene

General Overview

  • Resistant to most diluted inorganic acids, bases & salts and to most animal oils and fats.
  • Working Temperature: -40°C to +60°C
  • High Impact Strength
  • Light to Mid Grey in Colour
  • WRAS Approved
Clear PVC sheets

ABS is a homogenous material with a high impact resistance and elasticity given by the butadiene component.  A major advantage of the material as pressure pipe is the working temperature range -40°C to +60°C at pressures upto 15 bar.

All of our industrial ABS pressure pipe is supplied in a light to mid grey colour and is WRAS approved for drinking water. As such, it is suitable for connecting to mains water supply and can be used to convey potable water, it is also suitable for conveying many other process fluids.

We hold general stocks of ABS pipe in imperial, however, metric ABS is not so popular, it is only made by one manufacturer and more expensive than imperial counterparts; therefore we hold lower stocks of metric ABS and there may be lead times. Please see below for our list of generally stocked diameters, lengths and pressure ratings.

Technical & Properties

ABS PRESSURE PIPE

UV Resistance

ABS is not particularly resistant to UV light. When exposed to the sun, ABS material can show some colour fading and become less resistant to impacts with prolonged exposure to UV rays.

Chemical Resistance

ABS pipe is generally resistant to most diluted inorganic acids, bases and salts and to most animal fats and oils.  It is NOT resistant to organic solvents, alcohol, petrol, acetic acid, refrigerants and vegetable oils.  We'll be only to happy to help by providing information in regards to resistances to specific chemicals, if you need help please telephone 0161 655 4298.

Other Properties

Excellent chemical resistance and dielectric properties, good tensile, flexural and mechanical strength, low moisture absorption, excellent dimensional stability and good flammability characteristics.

Installation

ABS Solvent Cement

ABS Pressure pipe is intended to go inside any fittings, so ends are not flared and are supplied plain (without thread).  The fittings and pipe are to be connected by means of an ABS solvent cement to create a leak-free and pressure resistant joint.  Threaded fittings can be solvent welded on to the pipe which then facilitates the connection of other threaded parts and components.

Imperial pipe is measured & referenced by the Nominal Bore which is expressed in inches.

Imperial pipe is offered in classes which would indicate the different pressure ratings.

Metric pipe is measured by the Outer Diameter which is expressed in millimetres.

Metric pipe is classified by PN number which denotes the pressure rating.

NOT General Stock - We can facilitate your requests for Metric ABS pipe, however there may be lead times as we do not hold a general stock of this line on account of its low popularity.

NOT GENERAL STOCK

Metric ABS pipe and fittings aren't very popular.

ABS pipe, in metric, is only manufactured by one manufacturer and it is comparitively expensive in relation to Imperial ABS.

Therefore, we do not hold a general stock of Metric ABS Pipe or fittings. We can facilitate your requests for Metric ABS, but lead times may apply, we will inform you of any lead times on your no obligation quote.

Metric and Imperial pipes and fittings are measured and referenced differently and are not generally interchangeable. There are convertors and adaptors available that can join metric to imperial, if you need any help in this regard, then we are only a phone call away and ready to answer any of your technical piping queries.
