General Overview

Light transmission superior to glass

Unequalled resistance to weathering & ageing

Very easy to cut, machine, heat bend & shape

Easily bonded with reaction adhesives

Clear PVC sheets

In general, Clear Acrylic is a transparent grade of Acrylic, which is one of the oldest thermoplastic materials. It possesses reasonable strength to weight ratios and is mechanically stable up to about 80°C. It has a good resistance to alkalis and a limited resistance to organic solvents.  Clear acrylic sheet is a natural choice for machine room enclosures to control ingress and contamination, covers and security screens.

In the UK, in spite of its extraordinary weathering properties its usefulness as a structural material is limited by its relatively poor fire performance.

Acrylic is great for heat bending, machining and shaping.

General Applications for Clear Acrylic

• Curved panels in conservatories, greenhouses and architectural glazing.

• Sports halls and Swimming pools

• Food preparation areas

• Notice boards, borrowed light screens and draught excluders

Installation & Usage Hints

Cutting

Panels are best cut to size using a circular saw or band saw blades which are sharp, with 0° or negative front rake and plenty of clearance to facilitate swarf removal.  Jig saws tend to overheat the swarf which melts and fuses back on to the material. Avoid chipping and de-burr all edges before fitting.

Fixing

Ensure adequate allowance for expansion, a good rule of thumb is to use 5mm per metre length and width. and do not overtighten fastenings. Because of thermal expansion, drill any holes twice the diameter of the fastener and use washers both sides to spread the load.  Never use self tapping screws cutting into the material itself.

Sealants

Allowance needs to be made for thermal expansion, which necessitates the use of flexible acrylic based sealants. Care needs to be exercised in contact with silicones, plasticised PVC and some paint solvents.
